London's markets are some of the best in the world, each with its own distinct character and atmosphere. Whether you are after artisan food, vintage fashion, or handmade crafts, there is a market worth visiting — and most are free to browse.
The most famous of the lot is Borough Market, tucked beneath the railway arches near London Bridge. Open since the 13th century, it now draws food lovers from around the world with its mix of artisan producers, street food stalls, and specialist traders. Arrive early on a weekday to beat the weekend crowds.
For something completely different, head north to Camden Market — a sprawling collection of stalls along the Regent's Canal known for alternative fashion, vintage clothing, and an enormous international street food selection. The atmosphere is lively and eclectic, so plan to spend at least a couple of hours exploring.
In the heart of the West End, Covent Garden combines market shopping with street entertainment in one of London's most popular piazzas. The Apple Market sells handmade jewellery, art prints, and crafts, while the surrounding shops and restaurants make it easy to spend an entire afternoon in the area.
