Getting There by Train

The most straightforward way to reach Hever Castle by public transport is to take a train from London Bridge station to Hever station. The journey takes approximately one hour, with a change at Oxted or East Croydon depending on the service. Trains run regularly throughout the day, though services can be less frequent on weekends and bank holidays.

Hever station is small and unstaffed, typical of rural Kent stations. The castle itself dates from 1270, so the sense of history begins well before you arrive at the gates. There are no ticket barriers, and facilities are limited to a shelter and timetable information. It is worth buying your tickets in advance or using a contactless payment card, as there is no ticket office.

The Walk from Hever Station

From Hever station, the castle is about 1 mile away, a walk that takes 15 to 20 minutes along quiet country lanes. The route is signposted and mostly flat, passing through farmland and the edges of the village of Hever. It is a pleasant walk in good weather, with views of the surrounding countryside, but the lanes do not have pavements in places, so be aware of occasional traffic.

For those who prefer not to walk, taxis can sometimes be arranged in advance from Edenbridge, the nearest town with a taxi rank. However, availability can be limited, and it is advisable to book ahead rather than relying on finding a cab at the station.

Driving from London

By car, Hever Castle is approximately 30 miles from central London, a journey that typically takes about an hour depending on traffic. The most common route is to take the M25 to Junction 5 or 6, then follow the A21 or A25 towards Edenbridge and pick up signs to Hever.

The castle provides free parking in a large car park within the grounds. During peak periods, particularly summer weekends and school holidays, the car park can fill up, so arriving early is advisable. The approach roads are narrow country lanes in places, so a sat nav is recommended for first-time visitors.

Alternative Routes

Some visitors reach Hever via Edenbridge Town station, which is served by more frequent trains from London. From Edenbridge, the castle is about 3 miles away, which is too far to walk comfortably but manageable by taxi or bicycle. Edenbridge has bike hire facilities and the ride to the castle is along quiet, scenic lanes.

Another option is to drive to Edenbridge and park there, then walk or cycle to the castle. This can be useful on busy days when the castle car park is full, and it adds a pleasant rural walk to the day.

Combining with Other Visits

Hever Castle is located in an area of Kent rich in historic attractions. Chartwell, Winston Churchill's family home, is about 8 miles away. Penshurst Place, another medieval manor house, is roughly 6 miles to the southeast. And Tunbridge Wells, a historic spa town with shops and restaurants, is about 10 miles away. Visitors with a car can easily combine Hever with one or two other stops to make a full day in the Kent countryside.

For those relying on public transport, the train connections between these sites are less convenient, and a day combining multiple attractions is best done by car or as part of an organised tour.
