Monopoly-themed afternoon tea on a vintage Routemaster bus — buy properties and eat cake while rolling past real board locations
A vintage 1960s Routemaster bus wrapped in Monopoly branding departs from Somerset House on the Embankment and drives past the actual London streets that inspired the world's most famous board game. Each passenger receives a tablet loaded with a digital Monopoly game whose properties update in real time as the bus passes Mayfair, Piccadilly, Fleet Street and Park Lane outside the window.
You will eat Monopoly-themed afternoon tea — Pass 'GO'lden Chocolate Brownies, Fleet Street Red Macarons, Mr Monopoly's Millionaire Cheesecake — while buying properties, charging rent and competing against your tablemates. The 90-minute route covers more than a dozen landmarks without a single stop.
Brigit's Bakery launched the Monopoly London Tea Tour in partnership with Monopoly Lifesized, adding it to their fleet of themed afternoon tea buses that already includes the Paddington Bear tour. The experience combines a full afternoon tea service with a 90-minute sightseeing loop through central London aboard a restored 1960s Routemaster double-decker, with the added twist of an interactive digital Monopoly game played on tablets at each table.
The bus departs from Somerset House on Victoria Embankment and follows a route deliberately plotted to pass as many real Monopoly board locations as possible. Passengers roll past Fleet Street, The Strand, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Pall Mall, Mayfair and Park Lane — the same streets that Victor Watson of Waddingtons chose for the London edition of the board game back in 1935.
The Monopoly theming runs throughout the experience. Tables are decorated with branded crockery and each seat has access to a tablet running a custom Monopoly app. The digital board mirrors the standard London edition, with 8 property spaces, 4 corner squares, 2 utility squares and 2 train stations. Properties unlock as the bus passes each real-world location, so buying Mayfair only becomes available when the bus is actually driving through Mayfair.
The afternoon tea menu leans into the theme with items named after board squares. The Pass 'GO'lden Chocolate Brownie and Fleet Street Red Macaron sit alongside more traditional fare — smoked salmon and cream cheese pretzels, mini seasonal quiches, and a Mayfair scone with clotted cream and jam. Dietary variations including vegan, vegetarian, halal and gluten-free menus are available when specified at booking.
Tours depart Thursday to Sunday at 13:00, 16:00 and 19:00. All tickets must be booked in advance through the Brigit's Bakery website or by calling 020 3026 1188. Arrive at least 20 minutes before departure — the bus leaves promptly and cannot wait for latecomers. No refunds are given for missed departures, though date changes are available for a fee of £10 to £22.50 depending on notice given.
Children must be aged five or over. There are no toilets, seatbelts or buggy storage on board. One modified Routemaster with wheelchair access is available but must be reserved by phone as it does not appear on the online booking system. Prosecco and champagne can be pre-ordered at booking for an additional charge.
Prices vary by date, time and seat selection — all bookings are non-refundable but date changes are available for a fee
The Thursday lunchtime departure is the quietest slot and gives the best chance of upper deck seating. Weekend tours sell out weeks in advance, especially during holidays.
The bus departs promptly from Somerset House and will not wait. No refunds for missed departures. Look for the Monopoly-branded Routemaster on the Embankment.
Vegan, vegetarian, halal and gluten-free menus are available but must be requested at the time of booking. Nut-free requests cannot be accommodated.
There are no toilets on the vintage Routemaster and the 90-minute tour has no stops. The nearest public toilets are in Temple station or Somerset House.
The interactive Monopoly game runs on tablets at each table, but you will want a charged phone for photos of landmarks through the large Routemaster windows.
