St Paul's Cathedral

Baroque masterpiece by Christopher Wren with famous dome, Whispering Gallery, and panoramic city views.

St Paul's Cathedral

About

Wren's baroque masterpiece rises 365 feet above London, its magnificent dome surviving the Blitz to symbolize resilience. This architectural triumph took 35 years to complete (1675-1710), replacing medieval St Paul's destroyed in the Great Fire. State occasions from Churchill's funeral to the Queen's jubilees unfold beneath painted ceilings and carved stone.

Climbing to Heaven

The Whispering Gallery's acoustic quirk carries whispers 112 feet across the dome—test it if crowds allow. 257 steps up, panoramic views begin. The external Stone Gallery circles outside before the final climb to the Golden Gallery delivers 360-degree London views worth every one of the 528 steps.

Below, the crypt houses Nelson, Wellington, and Wren himself ("Reader, if you seek his monument, look around you"). Modern memorials include firefighters and pandemic workers. The geometric floor patterns guide visitors through centuries of monuments.

Divine Details

Grinling Gibbons' wood carvings showcase baroque craftsmanship at its finest. The high altar's gilded baldachin frames modern art installations. American Memorial Chapel honors US war dead with hidden eagle among the carvings.

Multimedia guides included with admission reveal architectural secrets. Evensong (weekdays 5pm, Sundays 3:15pm) offers free musical worship. Book online to skip queues. St Paul's tube exits at the cathedral steps. Allow two hours minimum—three if climbing dome.
