London Duck Tours
Amphibious vehicle tours combining road sightseeing with Thames splashdown. Unique way to see London by land and water.
About
Bright yellow amphibious vehicles splashed from London streets into the Thames until 2017, offering the capital's most distinctive tours. These converted WWII DUKWs (pronounced "ducks") seamlessly transitioned from road to river, providing elevated street views of Big Ben and Westminster before the dramatic splashdown at Vauxhall that thrilled millions during their operational years.
Land and Water Adventure
The 7-ton D-Day landing craft navigated London traffic surprisingly well, their height offering premium sightseeing. "Duck Masters" in naval attire blended historical facts with British humor, encouraging passengers to "quack" at pedestrians. The road portion covered major landmarks with entertaining commentary.
The climactic Thames entry transformed bus into boat. Once afloat, unique low-angle river perspectives showcased Parliament and London Eye. The 75-minute tours ran in all weather, with authentic military vehicles creating tangible wartime connections.
Legacy of Innovation
Though operations ceased due to aging vehicle safety concerns, Duck Tours pioneered experiential history tourism. They proved education and entertainment could combine successfully, introducing wartime history through joyful splashing adventures.
The tours demonstrated that preserved military equipment could serve peaceful purposes. Their absence leaves a gap in London's tourist offerings, but their legacy of reimagining existing resources for innovative tourism experiences continues to inspire.
