Buckingham Palace
Official London residence of the British Royal Family. Visit State Rooms in summer or watch the Changing of the Guard ceremony.
About
The world's most famous working palace houses 775 rooms where 800 staff serve the monarch daily. Queen Victoria made this her official residence in 1837, transforming a duke's mansion into the headquarters of constitutional monarchy. When the Royal Standard flies, the sovereign is home—making this living history, not museum.
State Room Splendor
Summer openings (July-September) reveal 19 State Rooms showcasing royal entertaining at its finest. The Throne Room hosted coronations, the 47-meter Picture Gallery displays Rembrandts and Vermeers, while the Ballroom seats 170 for state banquets with military precision—footmen use rulers to align glasses.
The White Drawing Room's hidden door (disguised as mirror and cabinet) provides dramatic royal entrances. Nash's Grand Staircase sets the stage with gilt-bronze balustrades and Hanover portraits greeting world leaders for two centuries.
Guards & Gardens
The Changing of the Guard (11am, check schedule) delivers free pageantry as red-tunicked Foot Guards perform 45-minute ceremony with military band. Arrive by 10:30am for good views at the palace gates or Victoria Memorial.
The 16-hectare gardens open during summer visits, featuring a lake, Rose Garden, and tennis court. Garden parties serve 30,000 teas to 8,000 guests per event. Book tickets early online; audio guides and garden highlights tours included in admission.
